Managed Healthcare Executive editors spoke with Bill McElnea, vice president of population health at Shields Health Solutions, about specialty pharmacies reducing costs for patients at the 2024 Asembia Specialty Pharmacy Summit in Las Vegas.
McElnea cited a study Shields Health collaborated on with UMass Memorial where patients using their specialty pharmacy had $1,200 lower medical expenses than those elsewhere.
He shared how this helped the health system under value-based care, and said, "(that example) was a specific instance of the health system specialty pharmacy that had helped to position the whole health system to do better under a specific value-based care arrangement."
