The Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy (FMCP), the educational and philanthropic arm of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), announced the winners in the 10th Annual AMCP/FMCP National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Competition, and FMCP Best Student Pharmacist and Best Resident or Fellow Poster Contests. The awards were presented in April at AMCP’s 22nd Annual Meeting & Showcase in San Diego, Calif.
The P&T Competition advances FMCP’s efforts to develop healthcare leaders, as well as its philanthropic mission by awarding scholarships to schools whose teams place first, second, and third. Winners of the Student Pharmacists P&T Competition were:
First Place - University of California, San Francisco; $2,500 scholarship; team members: Maher Abdel-Sattar, Douglas Beeman, Wen Chiu, and Meghan Frear; faculty adviser: Glenn Y. Yokoyama.
Second Place - University of Washington; $1,500 scholarship; team members: Jonathan Chenoweth, Carly Fuhrman, Shawn Hagland, and Zsolt Hepp; faculty advisers: David Veenstra and John Watkins.
Third Place - University of Pittsburgh; $1,000 scholarship; team members: Benjamin Cassidy, Eric Gardner, Gerard Mascara, and Michael Smith; faculty adviser: Jessica Daw.
The P&T Competition begins in the fall with local competitions held at AMCP student chapters. Four-member teams work through a case study involving a drug product dossier based on the AMCP Format for Formulary Submissions. Using the available evidence, the teams present their recommendations for formulary placement to a panel of judges representing a P&T committee.
The winning team from each school advances to the semi-finals, presenting their written materials to a panel of judges comprised of AMCP members. Eight finalist teams advance to the national level and compete at the AMCP annual meeting, where they present their recommendations to a panel of judges, also comprised of AMCP members.
Rounding out the list of eight finalists were teams from Drake University, Mercer University, Ohio Northern University, Purdue University, and Rutgers University.
The first-place team will be recognized during the AMCP Educational Conference in St. Louis in October. The FMCP poster competition contained 51 entrants. The annual competition provides student pharmacists, residents, or fellows an opportunity to demonstrate the managed care pharmacy skills and knowledge they have learned in their education. The 2010 winners were:
Best Student Pharmacist Poster Competition - Kellie Dudash, student pharmacist, Duquesne University’s Mylan School of Pharmacy, for “Use of Tumor Necrosis Factor Inhibitors in Ankylosing Spondylitis; A Cost Effectiveness Analysis and Budget Impact Analysis.”
Best Resident or Fellow Poster Competition Winner - Lillian Ndehi, pharmacy resident, Humana, for “Evaluation of Narcotic/Acetaminophen Prescription Patterns and Acetaminophen Toxicity in Managed Care Population.”
The posters were judged according to the paper’s scientific merit, evidence that the research conducted was innovative and practical, evidence that the results of the study match the paper’s conclusions, relevance of the study to managed care pharmacy practice, clarity of the material, and knowledge of the author regarding the subject matter during the presentation.
Each winner received a $500 award, provided by FMCP, a 1-year AMCP membership, and registration for the AMCP Educational Conference in October in St. Louis, as well as an engraved plaque to commemorate the achievement.
