The annual meeting of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy in Houston kicked off today at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. More than 4,000 attendees are expected to attend this year and will be sitting in on sessions about topics including pharmaceutical marketplace trends, GLP-1’s implications on managed care and the use of automation to lower pharmacy costs, the AMCP website says.

“Networking is really the one thing I'm most excited about,” Cynthia Thai, assistant director of Formulary Decisions at Cencora and member of the AMCP membership committee, said in an onsite interview with Managed Healthcare Executive. She is attending on behalf of Cencora and as an event volunteer. “I get to interact with a lot of the attendees at the conference, helping them navigate this large convention center. On behalf of my business, I get to connect with not only my current customers but also my potential customers. I work remotely, and my teams are all across the US, so I get to meet them in person.

Although the conference officially begins tomorrow, today’s visitors can attend the preconference program titled ‘The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Revolutionizing Managed Care.’ The session is led by a group of 15 faculty members who will explain how they use AI within their organizations and will highlight solutions to common problems within pharmacy practice today.

Vin Gupta, M.D., MPA, health policy expert and former CMO of Amazon Pharmacy, will present the opening general session on Tuesday titled, ‘The Future of Health Care: How Your Organization Will Be Impacted.’

Leia Roeges, associate director and managed care liaison at Neurocrine Biosciences. She is also attending AMCP as a volunteer and AMCP member.

“Like everybody else, I’m here learning about our industry, trying to stay on top of everything from the new drugs to the legislation, to also just connecting with my friends again,” Roeges said in an onsite interview with Managed Healthcare Executive. “I think what people are looking for are answers to what to expect for next year in managed care. I think what we’re all going to find out is that there are no answers, but how will you know unless you attend?”

In addition to session presentations, more than 75 exhibitors will be set up to showcase their products.

Nearly 400 posters will also be presented. Research topics from presenters include the economic burden of gout flares from high-cost episodes, a cost-effective analysis for lumbar disc herniation in the United States, and dosing insights and the effects of Medicare’s $35 insulin cap on adherence rates.

The meeting formally draws to a close on Thursday at 11:30 am.
