An overview of the definition of teledermatology and it’s three subtypes, according to Elizabeth K. Jones, M.D., FAAD, an associate dermatology professor at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
“Teledermatology is used as an umbrella term for the virtual delivery of dermatologic care,” Elizabeth K. Jones, M.D., FAAD, an associate dermatology professor at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. “This can be in the sense of providing provider to provider communication and care, or patient to provider communication and care.”
Jones explained that there are three subtypes of teledermatology:
“For a lot of practices, the hybrid model combines the live interactive video with the patient ability to submit photos or the physician ability to review photos,” Jones said. “There was an early AAD survey from 2020 that indicated about 72% of responding dermatologists felt like this was the most accurate form of teledermatology.”
Jones spoke at two sessions at the 2025 American Academy of Dermatology Meeting, held from March 7 – 11 in Orlando.
