Technology can help address the complexities of specialty medications by automating processes and enabling proactive interventions to ensure patients stay on their critical therapies, according to Kristen Whelchel, Pharm.D., CSP, Research and Patient Care Improvement Pharmacist with Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy's Department of Health Outcomes and Research.

“In patient monitoring and care coordination, we can really tap into technology as it evolves to help us take care of patients,” Kristen Whelchel, Pharm.D., CSP, Research and Patient Care Improvement Pharmacist with Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy's Department of Health Outcomes and Research explained.

Whelchel also highlighted a need for automation in specialty pharmacy.

“We need to automate things as much as possible and create safeguards so that these patients don't fall through the cracks when it comes to patient monitoring and care coordination,” she added.

Whelchel also talked about the complex nature of specialty pharmaceuticals.

“Access to these medications can be really difficult, and that's where technology really can help us make sure that we're optimizing access for patients who really need these medications,” she said.

Whelchel spoke last week at AMCP Nexus, held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The session was called, 'Advancing Patient Care and Demonstrating Value in Specialty Pharmacy Using Technology and Data Driven Care.'
