Updated: Mark Cuban CostPlus Lowers Prices of 30 Drugs

Mark Cuban CostPlus has lowered the cost of 30 drugs it offers, including the generic of the HIV medication Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir), the Parkinson’s therapy Requip (ropinirole), and the generic of the osteoporosis treatment Evista (raloxifene), the company announced. Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company is an online pharmacy (www.costplusdrugs.com) that launched in January 2022 to provider lower cost generic medications.

Some of the price changes the company announced include:

• Acyclovir 800 mg tablets from $16.50 to $12.90 for 90 tablets, which treats shingles and genital herpes.

• Celecoxib 100 mg capsules from $12.90 to $6.60 for 90 capsules, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for pain.

• Celecoxib 200 mg capsules from $12.90 to $7.50 for 90 capsules.

• Celecoxib 400 mg capsules from $55.20 to $14.70 for 90 capsules.

• Clindamycin benzoyl peroxide 1%/5% gel from $38.85 to $21.58 for 50 grams, a combination product used to treat acne.

• Emtricitabine/tenofovir 200 mg-300 mg from $27.65 to $16.80 for 30 tablets, which is used to treat HIV.

• Mirtazapine 30 mg tablets from $12.00 to $6.60 for 90 tablets, an antidepressant

• Mirtazapine 45 mg tablets from $12.00 to $7.50 for 90 tablets

• Ofloxacin 0.3% ophthalmic solution from $16.28 to $12.43 for 10 milliliters, which is used to trat middle ear infections.

• Ondansetron 4 mg tablets from $9.30 to $7.50 for 90 tablets, which is used to prevent nausea and vomiting.

• Raloxifene HCl 60 mg tablets from $22.80 to $13.80 for 90 tablets, which is an estrogen modulator used to prevent and treat osteoporosis.

• Ropinirole 5 mg tablets from $12.90 to $8.40 for 90 tablets, which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome.

• Ropinirole ER 2 mg tablets from $48.00 to $42.60 for 90 tablets

• Ropinirole ER 4 mg tablets from $113.70 to $33.60 for 90 tablets

• Ropinirole ER 6 mg tablets from $146.10 to $49.80 for 90 tablets

• Ropinirole ER 8 mg tablets from $133.50 to $57.00 for 90 tablets

A new analysis published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that if Medicare had purchased generic drugs supplied by Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company, it could have saved $3.3 billion (36%) on 77 of 89 (87%) generic drugs. “Generic drug competition is a major source of prescription drug savings in the United States, but the lower prices from a direct-to-consumer model highlight inefficiencies in the existing generic pharmaceutical distribution and reimbursement system,” investigators wrote.

Additionally, the company recently added 13 new products, including:

• Abiraterone acetate 250 mg, a generic for Zytiga, a hormone-based chemotherapy.

• Fluoxetine HCl 40 mg, a generic for the antidepressant Prozac.

• Ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% ophthalmic solution 5 mL and 10 mL, a generic for Acular, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory.

• Ofloxacin 0.3% ophthalmic solution 5 mL, a generic for the antibiotic Ocuflox.

• Clindamycin benzoyl peroxide 1%/5% gel 25 gm, a generic for BenzaClin, a topical antiseptic.

• Lisinopril / HCTZ 10 mg-12.5 mg and 20 mg-12.5 mg and 20 mg-25 mg, a generic for Zestoretic, which is used to treat hypertension

• Rivastigmine tartrate 1.5 mg, 3 mg, 4.5 mg, and 6 mg, a generic for Exelon, which is used to treat dementia.

Mark Cuban CostPlus’s prices reflect actual manufacturer prices plus a flat 15% margin and pharmacist fee. It is using Truepill’s digital health platform, which launched in 2016. Mark Cuban’s online pharmacy is a cash pay website and doesn’t accept insurance.
