Digital Health App for Diabetes May Reduce Healthcare Costs

Article

Digital health apps offer solutions to improve diabetes self-management.

LifeScan this week launched its OneTouch Store for patients to purchase personalized diabetes coaching and diabetes products.

Patients with diabetes can use the OneTouch Store to choose from a variety of subscriptions and stand-alone products for home delivery. If they subscribe to OneTouch coaching, they will receive unlimited one-on-one diabetes coaching from Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists and can use their health savings account or flexible spending account to help pay for the services.

Although health systems are striving to improve patient adherence to diabetes treatment plans to drive better outcomes and reduce costs, Lisa Rose, chief marketing officer at LifeScan, told Managed Healthcare Executive® 50% of people living with diabetes are not achieving glycemic targets, which could result in additional health complications and incremental costs for payors and health systems.

“To address this challenge, diabetes self-management is emphasized in treatment goals set together by people with diabetes, their family, and healthcare providers, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends patients be active and knowledgeable participants in their care,” Rose said. “Through patient-centric digital offerings and proven individualized coaching wellness solutions, we are making it easier for people with diabetes to seamlessly manage their health so they can focus on the rest of their life.”

Rose said payers may benefit from the technology’s data integration capabilities that help them deliver data and insights into each patient’s care journey. Such insights could help decide how to allocate resources, predict cost trends, and measure program effectiveness.

For providers, they can use the data at the point-of-care with the OneTouch Reveal HCP Web app to engage with the patient. Such data can help the provider get a better understanding of a patient’s complete health in real time and allow interventions to happen as soon as an issue is recognized. By administering interventions more quickly, it can improve outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and improve a patient’s overall quality of life.
